Fort Lauderdale opens door to develop Cypress Creek ‘urban village’
A 2014 Urban Land Institute study said Uptown's success depends on transforming the car-dependent employment center around Cypress Creek.
The Uptown Urban Village Technical Assistance Panel (TAP) explored how to reconfigure a job and transit-rich corridor along the Cypress Creek/I-95 area into a walkable, livable neighborhood.
The study was requested by the City of Fort Lauderdale, and funded in part by the ULI Foundation. The panel looked at ways to make the area more pedestrian and bike-friendly, as well as insert multi-family housing into the corridor. The reported created a blueprint for short, medium and long term land use and development changes for the corridor.
The August 2014 Urban Land Institute Technical Assistance Panel (TAP) report identified strategies in creating a more livable urban village core for the Uptown area. The panel was co-chaired by Chuck DeSanti of DeSanti & Associates and Sam Poole of Berger Singerman. Other TAP Panelists included Maurice Borrows of FDOT District 4, Ana Gelabert-Sanchez of Gelabert-Sanchez & Associates, Kona Gray of EDSA, Rick Hall of Hall Planning & Engineering, Inc., Larry Hymowitz of FDOT District 4, A. Brian Lomel of TLC Engineering for Architecture, Uri Man of Gables Residential/Florida, Darren J. Morse of Kitson & Partners, LLC, and Suria Yaffar of Zyscovich Architects.
